# Ultimate Channel Professional
|
||||
|
||||
## 1. Summary (Introduction)
|
||||
|
||||
The Ultimate Channel Pro is a modern volatility channel indicator developed by John Ehlers. It is designed to be a superior, low-lag alternative to the classic Keltner Channel.
|
||||
|
||||
While a standard Keltner Channel uses an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) for the centerline and an Average True Range (ATR) for the width, both of these components introduce significant lag. The Ultimate Channel solves this by replacing both components with Ehlers' **Ultimate Smoother**.
|
||||
|
||||
* **Centerline:** Calculated using the Ultimate Smoother on the price, providing a zero-lag representation of the trend.
|
||||
* **Channel Width:** Calculated using the Ultimate Smoother on the True Range (STR), providing a highly responsive measure of volatility.
|
||||
|
||||
The result is a channel that hugs the price action much tighter and reacts faster to breakouts than traditional methods.
|
||||
|
||||
## 2. Mathematical Foundations and Calculation Logic
|
||||
|
||||
The indicator consists of three lines: a centerline, an upper band, and a lower band.
|
||||
|
||||
### Calculation Steps (Algorithm)
|
||||
|
||||
1. **Calculate True Range (TR):** For each bar, the True Range is calculated as the greatest of:
|
||||
* Current High - Current Low
|
||||
* |Current High - Previous Close|
|
||||
* |Current Low - Previous Close|
|
||||
2. **Calculate Smoothed True Range (STR):** The raw True Range values are smoothed using the **Ultimate Smoother** filter with period `STRLength`.

3. **Calculate Centerline:** The source price (e.g., Close) is smoothed using the **Ultimate Smoother** filter with period `Length`.
|
||||
4. **Calculate Bands:**

||||

||||
* $\text{Lower Band} = \text{Centerline} - (\text{Multiplier} \times \text{STR})$

## 3. MQL5 Implementation Details

* **Dual-Engine Architecture (`Ultimate_Channel_Calculator.mqh`):** The indicator uses two separate instances of the `Ehlers_Smoother_Calculator` engine: one for the price and one for the volatility.

||||
* **Optimized Incremental Calculation:** The calculation is fully incremental (O(1)), processing only new bars while maintaining the recursive state of the Ultimate Smoothers.
|
||||
* **Heikin Ashi Integration:** An inherited `_HA` class allows the calculation to be performed on Heikin Ashi data. In this mode, the True Range is calculated using the Heikin Ashi High, Low, and Close.

## 4. Parameters
|
||||

||||
* **Centerline Length (`InpLength`):** The smoothing period for the middle line. (Default: `20`).
|
||||
* **STR Length (`InpSTRLength`):** The smoothing period for the True Range. (Default: `20`).
|

* *Note:* Ehlers often sets this equal to the Centerline Length, but they can be tuned independently.
|
||||
* **Multiplier (`InpMultiplier`):** The width of the channel in units of Smoothed True Range. (Default: `1.0`).

* **Applied Price (`InpSourcePrice`):** The source price for the centerline calculation.
|

## 5. Usage and Interpretation
|
||||
|
||||
The Ultimate Channel is primarily a **trend-following** and **breakout** indicator.
|
||||
|
||||
### **1. Trend Following (The "Hold" Strategy)**
|
||||
|
||||
Ehlers suggests a simple strategy:
|
||||
|
||||
* **Enter/Hold Long:** As long as the price remains **above the Lower Band** (or ideally, above the Centerline).
|
||||
* **Enter/Hold Short:** As long as the price remains **below the Upper Band**.
|
||||
* **Exit:** When the price closes outside the channel in the opposite direction of the trend.
|
||||
|
||||
### **2. Breakout Trading**
|
||||
|
||||
Because the Ultimate Channel has minimal lag, breakouts are signaled earlier than with Bollinger Bands or Keltner Channels.
|
||||
|
||||
* **Bullish Breakout:** A close above the Upper Band signals a potential strong uptrend or volatility expansion.
|
||||
* **Bearish Breakout:** A close below the Lower Band signals a potential strong downtrend.
|
||||
|
||||
### **3. Comparison to Bollinger Bands**
|
||||
|
||||
* **Bollinger Bands:** Width is based on Standard Deviation. They expand violently during volatility spikes.
|
||||
* **Ultimate Channel:** Width is based on Smoothed True Range. It expands more steadily and provides a more consistent "envelope" around the price, making it better for setting stop-losses.
