Fix MAMA phase discriminator, NATR test bug, tolerance unification, ROC naming, add 12 validation files

- MAMA: replace atan2+angle-wrapping with Ehlers/TA-Lib's atan(Q/I) signed-delta
  discriminator for both phase and period calculations. Was diverging from
  TA-Lib/Skender by up to 11%; now matches within 0.01 absolute tolerance.
- NATR: fix TA-Lib validation test dividing ATR by a close price ~14 bars
  misaligned (TA-Lib's output array is offset-compact, not absolute-indexed).
  Now passes at 1e-9 instead of masking the bug with a 0.10 tolerance.
- ValidationHelper: tighten default tolerances to match AGENTS.md (1e-9 for
  Skender/TALib/Tulip, 1e-6 for Ooples, was 1e-7 uniformly). Added documented
  per-test tolerance overrides where large-window/large-magnitude sums
  (WMA/HMA/TRIMA/DWMA period=100, rolling StdDev/Variance, AD cumulative sum,
  linear regression) genuinely exceed 1e-9 due to floating-point accumulation
  order, not algorithmic divergence.
- ROC/ROCP/ROCR: old Roc (Price-Price[N]) was an exact duplicate of Mom;
  removed. Old Rocp (100*(P-P[N])/P[N]) was actually TA-Lib's ROC formula;
  renamed to Roc. New Rocp created with TA-Lib's real ROCP formula
  ((P-P[N])/P[N], no *100). Updated C#, Quantower, Python bindings, and
  pandas-ta parity tests accordingly.
- Added Validation.Tests.cs for 12 previously-unvalidated indicators: Sarext
  (TA-Lib SarExt), Minindex/Maxindex (TA-Lib MinIndex/MaxIndex, exact match),
  Convexity (Skender GetBeta BetaType.All), Vwmacd (Vwma+Ema composition),
  and independent formula re-derivations for Usi, Eeo, Net, Pta, Amfm, Hwc
  (no external library implements these Ehlers indicators). Lpf validated
  structurally (documented invariants) given its 5-stage adaptive algorithm.
- Updated docs/validation.md, Roc.md/Rocp.md/Mom.md/Mama.md accordingly.

MOM (Momentum) calculates the absolute price difference between the current value and the value N periods ago. It is the purest expression of directional price movement, returning a signed value in the same units as the input. Positive MOM indicates rising prices; negative indicates falling. This is functionally identical to ROC but with a configurable lookback period (default 10 vs ROC's convention), and maps directly to TA-Lib's `MOM` function.

Maps directly to TA-Lib's `MOM` function; see [ROC](../roc/Roc.md) for the percentage form and [ROCP](../rocp/Rocp.md) for the decimal-fraction form.

ROC (Rate of Change) calculates the absolute price difference between the current value and the value N periods ago. This is the most basic form of momentum measurement, returning the raw price change in the same units as the input data. Unlike ROCP (percentage) or ROCR (ratio), ROC preserves the original scale, making it directly interpretable in dollar/point terms.
ROC (Rate of Change Percentage) calculates the percentage change between the current value and the value N periods ago. This is the most commonly used form of rate of change, expressing change in percentage terms that are directly interpretable (e.g., 5.0 = 5% increase).
## Historical Context
ROC belongs to the earliest class of technical indicators, predating computerized analysis. Traders have always measured "how much has price moved" as a fundamental question. The absolute form (current - past) appears in technical analysis literature under various names: momentum, price change, and rate of change. The terminology varies by platform and library:
ROC is the standard way of expressing price momentum in percentage terms. It's widely used in technical analysis because percentage changes are comparable across different instruments regardless of their price levels.
- **TA-Lib**: Uses `MOM` (Momentum) for absolute change
- **Tulip**: Uses `MOM` for absolute change
- **TradingView/PineScript**: Uses `ROC` for absolute change in this codebase
- **QuanTAlib**: Uses `ROC` for absolute change, `CHANGE` for percentage
This implementation follows the PineScript convention where ROC represents the absolute difference.
The terminology varies by platform:
- **TA-Lib**: `ROC` returns percentage (5.0 = 5%); `ROCP` returns the decimal fraction (0.05 = 5%)
- **TradingView/PineScript**: Often uses `change` for the absolute (non-percentage) form
- **QuanTAlib**: `Roc` returns percentage (5.0 = 5%, matches TA-Lib `ROC`); `Rocp` returns the decimal fraction (0.05 = 5%, matches TA-Lib `ROCP`); `Mom` returns the absolute change

## Common Pitfalls
1. **Unit confusion**: ROC returns absolute values in price units, not percentages. A ROC of 5 means the price moved 5 dollars/points, not 5%.
1. **Scale**: ROC returns percentage values directly. A return of 5.0 means 5%, not 0.05.
2. **Scale dependency**: ROC values are not comparable across instruments with different price levels. Use ROCP or CHANGE for normalized comparisons.
2. **Division by zero**: If the historical price is zero, ROC returns 0.0 as a safe default.
3. **Warmup period**: The first `period` values return 0 as there's no historical reference point.
3. **Don't confuse with ROCP**: QuanTAlib's `Rocp` (a separate indicator) returns the decimal fraction (0.05 for 5%), matching TA-Lib's `ROCP`. This `Roc` indicator matches TA-Lib's `ROC` (percentage).
4. **Zero handling**: Unlike percentage-based variants, ROC has no division-by-zero risk.
4. **Compounding**: Unlike ROCR, ROC values cannot be directly multiplied for multi-period changes.
5. **Sign interpretation**: Positive ROC indicates price increase, negative indicates decrease.
6. **API confusion**: QuanTAlib's `CHANGE` indicator returns percentage (decimal), while `ROC` returns absolute change. This differs from some platforms where ROC means percentage.
5. **Warmup period**: The first `period` values return 0.0.

- Validated against TA-Lib reference implementation.
ROCP (Rate of Change Percentage) calculates the percentage change between the current value and the value N periods ago. This is the most commonly used form of rate of change, expressing change in percentage terms that are directly interpretable (e.g., 5.0 = 5% increase).
ROCP calculates the fractional (decimal) change between the current value and the value N periods ago (e.g., 0.05 = 5% increase, -0.03 = 3% decrease). It is identical to QuanTAlib's [ROC](../roc/Roc.md) divided by 100.
## Historical Context
ROCP is the standard way of expressing price momentum in percentage terms. It's widely used in technical analysis because percentage changes are comparable across different instruments regardless of their price levels.
TA-Lib exposes three related rate-of-change functions that are frequently confused:
The terminology varies by platform:
- **TA-Lib**: Uses `ROCP` for percentage change / 100 (decimal form)
- **TradingView/PineScript**: Often uses `change` for this calculation
- **QuanTAlib**: Uses `ROCP` for percentage (5.0 = 5%), `CHANGE` for decimal (0.05 = 5%)
- **`MOM`**: absolute change, `Price - Price[N]` (price units)
- **`ROC`**: percentage change, `100 × (Price - Price[N]) / Price[N]` (5.0 = 5%)
- **`ROCP`**: fractional change, `(Price - Price[N]) / Price[N]` (0.05 = 5%)
- **`ROCR`**: ratio, `Price / Price[N]` (1.05 = 5% increase)
## Architecture & Physics
QuanTAlib mirrors this exactly: `Mom`, `Roc`, `Rocp`, `Rocr` map one-to-one to TA-Lib's `MOM`, `ROC`, `ROCP`, `ROCR`.
### 1. Ring Buffer Storage
The indicator maintains a sliding window of `period + 1` values:
## Core Formula
$$
\text{buffer} = [v_{t-n}, v_{t-n+1}, ..., v_{t-1}, v_t]
\text{ROCP}_t = \frac{P_t - P_{t-n}}{P_{t-n}}
$$
where $n$ is the lookback period.
### 2. Percentage Calculation
$$
\text{ROCP}_t = 100 \times \frac{v_t - v_{t-n}}{v_{t-n}}
$$
where:
- $v_t$ = current value
- $v_{t-n}$ = value from $n$ periods ago
- Result is in percentage units (5.0 = 5%)
## Mathematical Foundation
### Core Formula
$$
\text{ROCP}_t = 100 \times \frac{P_t - P_{t-n}}{P_{t-n}}
$$
### Relationship to Other Rate of Change Variants
| Indicator | Formula | Output |
|-----------|---------|--------|
| **ROC** | $P_t - P_{t-n}$ | Absolute (price units) |
| **ROCP** | $\frac{P_t - P_{t-n}}{P_{t-n}} \times 100$ | Percentage (%) |
| **ROCR** | $\frac{P_t}{P_{t-n}}$ | Ratio (dimensionless) |
| **CHANGE** | $\frac{P_t - P_{t-n}}{P_{t-n}}$ | Decimal (0.10 = 10%) |
### Conversions
$$
\text{ROCP} = \text{CHANGE} \times 100
\text{ROCP} = \frac{\text{ROC}}{100}
$$
$$
\text{ROCP} = (\text{ROCR} - 1) \times 100
$$
## Behavior
$$
\text{CHANGE} = \text{ROCP} / 100
$$
## Performance Profile
### Operation Count (Streaming Mode)
| Operation | Count | Notes |
| :--- | :---: | :--- |
| SUB | 1 | current - past |
| DIV | 1 | change / past |
| MUL | 1 | × 100 |
| Buffer add | 1 | O(1) ring buffer |
| **Total** | **~4 ops** | Very lightweight |
### Quality Metrics
| Metric | Score | Notes |
| :--- | :---: | :--- |
| **Accuracy** | 10/10 | Exact arithmetic |
| **Timeliness** | 10/10 | Zero lag |
| **Smoothness** | 3/10 | Reflects raw volatility |
| **Simplicity** | 10/10 | Basic arithmetic |
## Interpretation
* **ROCP = 0.0**: No change from N periods ago
* **ROCP > 0**: Price increased (e.g., 5.0 = 5% increase)
* **ROCP < 0**: Price decreased (e.g., -3.0 = 3% decrease)
* **ROCP = 100**: Price doubled
* **ROCP = -50**: Price halved
* **ROCP > 0**: Price increased (e.g., 0.05 = 5% increase)
* **ROCP < 0**: Price decreased (e.g., -0.03 = 3% decrease)
* **ROCP = 1.0**: Price doubled
* **ROCP = -0.5**: Price halved
## Validation
| Library | Status | Notes |
| :--- | :---: | :--- |
| **TA-Lib** | ✅ | Note: TA-Lib ROCP returns decimal (0.05), multiply by 100 |
| **TradingView** | ✅ | Matches PineScript calculation |
| **TA-Lib** | ✅ | Matches TA-Lib's `ROCP` directly (both return the decimal fraction) |
## Common Pitfalls
1. **Scale**: ROCP returns percentage values directly. A return of 5.0 means 5%, not 0.05.
1. **Scale**: ROCP returns a decimal fraction. A return of 0.05 means 5%, not 5.0.
2. **Division by zero**: If the historical price is zero, ROCP returns 0.0 as a safe default.
2. **Don't confuse with ROC**: QuanTAlib's `Roc` (a separate indicator) returns percentage (5.0 for 5%). This `Rocp` indicator returns the decimal fraction (0.05 for 5%).
3. **TA-Lib difference**: TA-Lib's ROCP returns decimal form (0.05 for 5%), while this implementation returns percentage form (5.0).
3. **Division by zero**: If the historical price is zero, ROCP returns 0.0 as a safe default.
4. **Compounding**: Unlike ROCR, ROCP values cannot be directly multiplied for multi-period changes.
5. **Warmup period**: The first `period` values return 0.0.
4. **Warmup period**: The first `period` values return 0.0.

QuanTAlib's MAMA differs from every other implementation in circulation. Not because we wanted to be clever. Because we read the original paper, transcribed the EasyLanguage code by hand, and noticed that TradeStation returns arctangent *in degrees*, while C#'s `Math.Atan` returns radians.
Most libraries ported Ehlers' numbers blindly. TA-Lib hardcodes `a = 0.0962` and `b = 0.5769`. But Ehlers' EasyLanguage code shows these as `5/52` and `15/26`. The difference? About 0.04% per coefficient. Small, but compounding. After 100 bars of recursive smoothing, your MAMA is off by 0.5%. After 500 bars, 2-3%. This is why TA-Lib's MAMA doesn't quite match TradingView, which doesn't quite match Skender, which doesn't quite match anything.
Most libraries ported Ehlers' numbers blindly. TA-Lib hardcodes `a = 0.0962` and `b = 0.5769`. But Ehlers' EasyLanguage code shows these as `5/52` and `15/26`. The difference is about 0.04% per coefficient, which compounds over long recursive smoothing runs. QuanTAlib uses the exact fractions instead.
We chose precision.
An earlier revision of this indicator also replaced Ehlers' `atan(Q/I)` phase discriminator with `atan2(Q, I)` plus angle-wrapping, believing that was a "more correct" quadrant-aware version. It was not: TA-Lib and Skender.Stock.Indicators independently agree with each other to ~1e-11, because both implement Ehlers' plain `atan` discriminator (including its sign-driven asymmetric clamp on the phase delta). The `atan2` variant broke that clamp and diverged from all reference libraries by up to 11%. QuanTAlib now uses the same `atan(Q/I)` formulation as Ehlers/TA-Lib/Skender.

### The Radians Strategy
### The Atan Discriminator
Ehlers worked in TradeStation, where `ArcTangent` returns degrees. His formulas assume this. When you port to C#, `Math.Atan` returns radians. If you don't convert, your period calculation is off by a factor of ~57.3 (180/π). If you convert inconsistently, phase and period drift out of sync.
Ehlers used `atan(Q/I)` (single-quadrant, with a zero-check on `I`) together with a **signed, unwrapped** phase delta: `DeltaPhase = Phase[t-1] - Phase[t]`, floored at 1 degree (never taking an absolute value). When the discriminator's quadrant flips, that signed delta swings sharply negative, which forces `alpha` all the way up to `FastLimit` for one bar. This asymmetric "snap to full speed" behavior on quadrant flips is a deliberate part of Ehlers' design — it's how MAMA re-acquires the cycle quickly when the phase model breaks down.
QuanTAlib uses radians everywhere. Phase, period, angle—all radians. The minimum delta is `π/180` (1 degree in radians). The alpha calculation becomes:
An `atan2(Q, I)` + phase-wrapping formulation (normalizing the delta back into `[-π, π]`) looks more "mathematically correct" but it removes exactly this snap behavior, since wrapping keeps the delta small and positive across quadrant flips instead of letting it spike negative. That single change was enough to make QuanTAlib disagree with TA-Lib and Skender by as much as 11%, even though both of those libraries agree with each other to ~1e-11. QuanTAlib now uses the same `atan(Q/I)` + signed-delta formulation as Ehlers/TA-Lib/Skender:
```csharp
// Pre-scale fastLimit to radians-space: preserves degree-based semantics
// while using radians internally for all trig operations
_scaledFastLimit = fastLimit * (Math.PI / 180.0);
// Phase calculation (degrees, matches TA-Lib atan(Q1/I1), not atan2)
_state.Phase = i1 != 0.0 ? Math.Atan(q1 / i1) * RadToDeg : 0.0;
// Phase delta with signed difference and minimum clamp (Ehlers' design)
double delta = Math.Max(_p_state.Phase - _state.Phase, Math.PI / 180.0);
// Alpha inversely proportional to phase change rate
double alpha = _scaledFastLimit / delta;
alpha = Math.Clamp(alpha, _slowLimit, _fastLimit);
// Signed delta, no wrapping: quadrant flips intentionally spike alpha to FastLimit
double deltaPhase = _p_state.Phase - _state.Phase;
if (deltaPhase < 1.0) { deltaPhase = 1.0; }
double alpha = deltaPhase > 1.0 ? Math.Max(_fastLimit / deltaPhase, _slowLimit) : _fastLimit;
```
This preserves Ehlers' parameter semantics (`fastLimit = 0.5` still means "max alpha at 1-degree phase change") while eliminating unit conversion overhead.
### The Atan2 Decision
Ehlers used `atan(Q/I)` with manual zero-checks because TradeStation's `atan2` didn't exist when he wrote this in 2001. Modern implementations cargo-culted the division. QuanTAlib uses `atan2(Q, I)`:
```csharp
// Period calculation: atan2 handles all quadrants correctly
double angle = Math.Atan2(_state.Im, _state.Re);
double period = Math.Abs(angle) > MinDeltaRadians
? TwoPi / Math.Abs(angle)
: _p_state.Period;
// Phase calculation: no division-by-zero risk
_state.Phase = Math.Atan2(q1, i1);
```
Benefits:
* No conditional branches (atan2 handles i1=0 internally)
* Proper quadrant handling (range [-π, π] instead of [-π/2, π/2])
* Fewer edge cases during quadrant crossings
The absolute value in period calculation ensures we always get positive periods, even when the angle is in quadrants 3 or 4. Ehlers' original could produce negative periods that got clamped to 6.0. We handle it mathematically.
The period discriminator follows the same rule: `Period = 360 / atan(Im/Re)` (degrees, no absolute value). A negative result is not an error — it simply falls outside `[periodFloor, periodCap]` and gets clamped back into range by the existing bounds check, exactly as in TA-Lib.
### Convergence with Other Libraries
QuanTALib MAMA values will diverge slightly from TA-Lib and Skender libraries. Expected differences:
**Early period (bars 0-100):**
* ±1-5% difference due to initialization and coefficient accumulation
**Steady state (bars 100+):**
* ±0.01-0.05% difference from constant precision errors
* Larger spikes (±0.1-1%) during quadrant transitions where atan2's range helps
**Trading signals:**
* MAMA/FAMA crossovers will match 98%+ of the time
* Exact numerical values will differ
This is a feature, not a bug. QuanTAlib is computing the mathematically correct MAMA. Everyone else is computing an approximation that accumulated 20 years of copy-paste errors.
With the atan-based discriminator, QuanTAlib tracks TA-Lib and Skender to within ~1e-2 absolute at steady state (bars 100+), on price series in the low thousands. The residual comes from warmup/priming differences — TA-Lib primes its Hilbert Transform state with a 32-bar WMA-based unstable period, while QuanTAlib uses a running average of the first 6 bars — not from a discriminator mismatch. MAMA/FAMA crossovers match essentially all of the time.

| **QuanTAlib** | ✅ Reference | Mathematically correct implementation |
| **Skender** | ⚠️ | Diverges 0.02-0.05% at steady state due to constant precision |
| **Ooples** | ⚠️ | High divergence (different initialization strategy) |
| **TA-Lib** | ⚠️ | Diverges 0.02-0.1% due to hardcoded decimals |
| **Tulip** | N/A | Not implemented |
| Library | Status | Notes |
| :------------ | :----- | :--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **QuanTAlib** | ✅ | Same `atan(Q/I)` phase discriminator as Ehlers/TA-Lib/Skender |
| **Skender** | ✔️ | Matches within 0.01 absolute at steady state; residual from warmup/priming differences |
| **Ooples** | ✔️ | Matches within 0.01 absolute at steady state; Ooples also uses truncated 4-decimal constants |
| **TA-Lib** | ✔️ | Matches within 0.01 absolute at steady state; residual from WMA-based 32-bar unstable period vs QuanTAlib's 6-bar average warmup |
| **Tulip** | N/A | Not implemented |
The divergence is not a bug. TA-Lib uses `a = 0.0962` instead of `5.0/52.0 = 0.09615384...`. After 100 recursive smoothing passes, this 0.04% coefficient error compounds to 0.5-2% in the final value. Skender correctly uses `2π/atan(...)` for period but still uses hardcoded decimals. Only QuanTAlib uses exact fractions throughout.
If you need bit-for-bit compatibility with TA-Lib for legacy backtests, use TA-Lib. If you want the mathematically correct MAMA that Ehlers intended, use QuanTAlib.
QuanTAlib still uses exact fractions (`5/52`, `15/26`) instead of TA-Lib's truncated decimals (`0.0962`, `0.5769`), which avoids coefficient rounding error compounding over long runs. That is a genuine, if small, precision improvement — but it is independent of, and much smaller than, the phase-discriminator bug this indicator previously had.
## Usage Guidelines
@@ -355,6 +309,6 @@ MAMA works best when combined with indicators that cover its blind spots:
4. **Initialization Bias**: The first 50-100 bars are unreliable. MAMA needs time for the Hilbert Transform to stabilize and for period estimates to converge. Always discard or ignore the first `WarmupPeriod` (set to 50 for safety).
5. **Precision Expectations**: Don't expect your MAMA to match TradingView or TA-Lib to the sixth decimal. It won't. Those implementations have accumulated rounding errors from 20 years of cargo-cult porting. Your values will be more accurate but numerically different. If this breaks your backtests, the backtests were fragile.
5. **Precision Expectations**: QuanTAlib tracks TA-Lib and Skender within ~0.01 absolute at steady state, but won't match them to the sixth decimal. The residual comes from warmup/priming differences (TA-Lib primes with a 32-bar WMA-based unstable period; QuanTAlib uses a 6-bar running average), not from the phase discriminator. If this breaks your backtests, the backtests were fragile.
6. **Ignoring the Alpha Output**: Many traders only look at MAMA and FAMA values. The adaptive alpha itself is valuable information—it tells you how confident MAMA is in its cycle estimate. High alpha (near FastLimit) means rapid phase change and uncertainty. Low alpha (near SlowLimit) means stable, established trend.
